Event Recap
Amid a crowd of 400 guests, Mayor Bart Peterson led the charge that raised $124,000 to benefit the construction of a new family center at Windsor Village Park and the work of the Indianapolis Parks Foundation. The 2005 IPL Mayor’s Lunch for Parks was held Thursday, March 3, 2005, at the Westin Indianapolis.
“Raising that kind of money in a two-hour luncheon makes the Board very proud,” said Ed Jolliffe, chair of the Indianapolis Park Foundation Board of Trustees. “We can’t thank Mayor Peterson enough for his continued commitment to our mission. Without his support and attendance, we could not have drawn the crowd and could not have secured that money for our 2005 campaign.”
An audience representing business executives, elected officials and community leaders heard Mayor Peterson speak to the importance of parks in turning a neighborhood into a community and how he sees Indy Parks and Recreation, the city agency that manages the chain of 172 parks, meeting the needs of Indianapolis residents. Monies raised by the Indianapolis Parks Foundation in 2005 will fund the renovation of the family center at Windsor Village Park.
"It's encouraging to see so many local leaders come together with the Parks Foundation to support the youth at Windsor Village Park," said Mayor Peterson in his address at the luncheon. "Investing in a new family center today will offer our youth a positive alternative to crime and violence, and revitalize the neighborhoods surrounding the park, helping Indianapolis live up to its potential as a world class place to call home."
Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL) sponsored the luncheon as it has every year since its inception in 2003. The utility’s support of the Indianapolis Parks Foundation was reinforced in September 2004 when its parent company AES Corporation donated $1.1 million to the foundation.
"IPL has a philanthropic mission that focuses on the preservation and enhancement of the city’s natural resources – facilities that all of its citizens are free to enjoy,” said Ann Murtlow, president and CEO of IPL. “And, our commitment has spread beyond the boundaries of this city to IPL’s parent company, the AES Corporation in Virginia.”
Funds raised by this and through other donations to the foundation in 2005 will support the construction of a new family center at Windsor Village Park. Near the intersection of 25th Street and Kitley Avenue, the east side park serves a dense, residential neighborhood. The current community center, although in a state of disrepair, offers educational, recreational and social opportunities for an estimated 2,100 children each year.
The 2004 IPL Mayor’s Lunch for Parks raised more than $150,000 to benefit the Parks Endowment Fund and the work of IPF. Proceeds benefiting the endowment fund were matched by 50 percent by The Indianapolis Foundation. In 2003, the event raised more than $100,000 for the renovation of Willard Park and the work of IPF.

About Windsor Village Park
The third annual IPL Mayor's Lunch for Parks benefits Windsor Village Park and the work of the Indianapolis Parks Foundation.
Windsor Village Park is a small park located in an dense residential community that was divided with the construction of Interstate 70, which runs along the northern edge of the property. Neighborhood residents rely on the park for recreational and social opportunities, and yet the park needs attention. The family center, in particular, is in disrepair.
The Indianapolis Parks Foundation is focusing its fundraising efforts in 2005 on Windsor Village Park. A recent study showed that the park's greatest need was for the replacement of its family center. Contributions to IPF will support the construction of a new, larger community center.
